Recently a student approached me for help in figuring out a protocol. Her client had acid reflux GERDS and she wanted to use essential oils to help. She had read the article on Essential Oils and Digestive Complaints but was looking for more specific information on acid reflux.
As I explained to her, we don’t set up a series of protocols for each and every condition that is out there, but if we follow a process of understanding exactly what the condition is and what we are hoping to achieve with our use of essential oils we can customize each blend specifically for the individual.
To start I recommended that she review the Mayo Clinic’s data base on exactly what GERDS is. I most often use the Mayo Clinic site but there are other medical database out there that also have reliable information.
Once we have a good understanding of the condition, we look at the specific symptoms being experienced by the individual for whom the blend is intended. What are their physical symptoms? Not everyone suffers from the same symptoms so it is important to narrow it down. I believe it is also important to consider what is going on for them emotionally. In my own experience, there is always an emotional/mental/spiritual aspect to every condition, whether or not the person is open to seeing this. Therefore if you address the emotional aspect, unique to the individual as well, your results will be so much quicker.
You would start by considering essential oils that have antispasmodic properties examples include:chamomile, fennel, melissa, orange and peppermint.
Then consider essential oils which have carminative and stomachic properties examples include: basil, chamomile, fennel, mandarin and peppermint.
Now consider what the emotional component for the individual and consider the essential oils that might be helpful.
Once your blend has been created it can be used in a number of different ways.
- Dilute the essential oil blend in a carrier (oil, cream or lotion) and apply this in soothing circular, clockwise massage of the abdomen
- You can add the blend to a warm bowl of water an apply a warm compress to the abdomen.
- You can add the essential oil blend to a bath and relax inhaling in the aroma.
- Add your blend to a personal inhaler, so that you have it handy to sniff whenever the symptoms.
