Men have been growing, grooming, trimming and shaving beards since the beginning of time. A look through history shows that the way that men have worn their facial hair has often followed cultural and traditional lines. It is very interesting to see how different trends developed over time. In more modern times growing, or not growing a beard, is often a ‘fashion statement’ and not just lack of grooming. It can take time and effort to create just the perfect beard, and keeping facial hair and skin in good condition should be an important part of grooming.
Making up an Essential Oil Beard Oil is quick and easy!
Remember a little goes a long way and blending in a small 10ml bottle with a dropper top is a great way to control how much is used. Essential oils are very potent and as this blend will be applied to the face keep the dilution of essential oils in the final product very low at 1% or less. In practical terms this means that for every teaspoon (5ml) of carrier oil you add 1 drop of essential oil or essential oil synergy, so in the 10ml bottle you would add just 2 drops. Your choice whether you want to just go with a single note essential oil or make up a synergy and then just add 2 drops of the synergy to the final product.
There are a number of carrier oils and essential oils one could consider using for a Beard Oil and for more suggestions and ideas on what to choose depending on skin type, read the article on Essential Oils and Skin Care. However as it is particularly good for all skin types I would recommend going with Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis). It contains protein, minerals, plant wax and myristic acid and has a chemical composition resembling the skin’s sebum. Its waxy structure and anti-bacterial properties give it a long shelf life. It is readily absorbed by the skin and has a non-oily softening effect. It is especially suitable for the face and is used for eczema, psoriasis, and hair care. Rosemary, Lavender, Chamomile, Geranium and Vetiver essential oil are all good options for using in a Beard Oil. Choose the one you like the aroma of best or try making up one of the following synergies and adding just 2 drops of it to the 10ml jojoba oil.
1 drop Lavender
1 drop Rosemary
1 drop Geranium
1 drop Vetiver
3 drops Lavender
2 drops Rosemary
1 drop Chamomile
